J.D. Mann became involved in funeral service in 1905 by providing a horse drawn hearse for funerals. In 1921 J.D. Mann joined J.H. Hahne, who operated a furniture store and funeral business, as a partner in the funeral part of his business. This partnership lasted until 1928
when Mr. Mann opened his own funeral business and ambulance service in a storefront building located in the business district of Nashville, IL. Mr. Mann built a new funeral home on the west side of the county courthouse that was designed exclusively for use as a funeral home in 1938. This was one of the first buildings
constructed specifically for funerals in Southern Illinois. The funeral home was designed by Karl Odenwald, a St. Louis architect and was built by Barney Holthouse of Oconee, IL. The ornamental plaster on the chapel ceiling, was created by Eugene Geisler. He was a former editor of the "Deutche Vogenblatt," a German newspaper in St. Louis.
The new funeral home was added on to a two-story brick home that was built in the 1860's. The residence belonged to Mr. Mann's father and mother-in-law. Richard M. Pyatt purchased the Mann Funeral Service from J.D. and Viola Mann in 1970. Eric Campagna and wife Kathy moved to Nashville to become resident manager. Eric became a partner in the business in 1974. Mr. Campagna became the sole owner
of the Campagna Funeral Home in 1987. In 1990 Paul Todd was hired as a funeral director and embalmer. Mr. Todd became a partner in the business in 2005. In keeping with the tradition of a family owned and operated funeral home, Eric Campagna's son-in-law, Chad Rhine joined the firm in 2006 as a funeral director and embalmer. Chad is the husband of Katie Campagna Rhine. Katie has been in charge of
family services for all of the funeral homes beginning in January of 2000.
