Mr. Robert J. “Bob” Schaltenbrand, R.PH. of
Nashville, Illinois departed this life at the Dammert
Geriatric Center at Our Lady of The Snows in
Belleville, Illinois on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at
5:40 P.M. He had attained the age of 73 years, 6
months, and 6 days.
Mr. Schaltenbrand was born in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania on August 30, 1936. He was the son of
Lawrence and Theresa (Pottmeyer) Schaltenbrand. Bob
was united in marriage to Judith Farmer on February
2, 1963 at the St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Troy,
IL, and she survives his passing.
Bob was a graduate of the St. Louis College of
Pharmacy in 1961. He purchased Scott’s Drug Store in
Nashville in 1963, and opened Bob’s Pharmacy. He
entered into a partnership with Howard Frederking,
R.PH., in 1969 they combined Bob’s Pharmacy and
Howard’s Drug Store and opened Nashville Pharmacy,
Inc. of which Bob was president. He was an active
pharmacist/owner until poor health forced his
retirement in 2009. He served his profession as a
member of the Illinois and American Pharmacist
Association since 1961, Kaskaskia Valley Pharmacist
Association, Illinois Department of Public Aid Drug
Advisory Committee and St. Louis College of Pharmacy
Alumni Association. Bob lectured class at St. Louis
College of Pharmacy – entitled “Long Term Care
Facility -Pharmaceutical Services”. He was presented
the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Outstanding
Achievement Award, Denny Foster Service To Pharmacy
Award, and the Bowl of Hygeia-Pharmacy Community
Service Award by the Illinois Pharmacist Association
Pharmacist of the Year.
Bob was revered for his leadership in the Boy
Scouting. He began in Belleville as Scoutmaster of
Troop 12 from 1956-58. He then was the Assistant
Scoutmaster of Troup 4 in Belleville from 1958-63 and
from 1964 to present, he was the Scoutmaster of Troop
127 of Nashville. He also served as Cubmaster for
Pack127 from 1972-1989. Bob was active with the Boy
Scout Council Fund Drive beginning in 1964 and served
as Committee Chairman from 1989 until present. In
1977, he became a member of the National Eagle Scout
Association (N.E.S.A.) and served as chairman of the
N.E.S.A. from 1985-94 and 1995 to present. Boy Scout
Troop 127 had 104 Eagles from 1967 through 2009. Mr.
Schaltenbrand received many awards including, Eagle
Scout Award, Scout Statuette District Award, Wood
Badge Beads, St. George Award, Silver Beaver,
Scoutmaster of the Year, North Central Region 1983,
Silver Wreath, Scoutmaster Award of Merit from Okaw
Valley, the The Bronze Pelican, the 25 and 50 Year
Veteran Award, and 2010 Nisha Kittan Lodge Scouting
National Honor Society.
Bob was also active in the Nashville Jaycees,
Honorary Fourth Degree Lifetime membership in the
Knights of Columbus, Nashville Theater Corporation,
the Washington County Fair Association, and the
Nashville Chamber of Commerce. Bob was a
Pharmaceutical Curriculum Advisor for Nashville
Community High School. He received Man of the Year by
the Modern Woodman of America, Man of the Year by
Nashville Jaycees, Citizen of the Year by the
Nashville Chamber of Commerce, and the Community
Builders Award. Bob was a member of St. Ann Catholic
Church in Nashville, where he served as a Lector,
Extraordinary Minister, St. Ann School Board Member
and St. Ann Parish Trustee.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Judith A
(Judy) Schaltenbrand of Nashville, IL, 3 children,
Robert J. Schaltenbrand Jr. and wife Lisa of Kansas
City, Mo., Theresa M. (Terri) Lohmann and husband
Steve of Nashville and Thomas M. (Tom) Schaltenbrand
and wife Melanie of Belleville, IL; 8 grandchildren,
Andrew and Alexis Schaltenbrand, Alexander, Cody,
Josh, and Alyssa Lohmann, Samuel and Margaret
Schaltenbrand; 4 brothers, Lawrence (special friend
Janice Mahoney) Schaltenbrand of Belleville, William
(Vicki) Schaltenbrand of Millstadt, IL, Edward
(Phyllis) Schaltenbrand of Belleville, and James
(Mary Beth) Schaltenbrand of Smithton, IL; 2 sisters,
Patricia (James) Kennedy of Redbud, IL, and Rose Mary
(Richard) Chenault of Belleville; 2 sisters-in-law,
Rose Marie Rogier of Edwardsville, IL and Mary Pat
Farmer of Granit City, IL; nieces, nephews, other
relation and an abundance friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a
brother-in-law, Jim Farmer.
